The 2019 Haut-Bailly had just been bottled prior to my visit. This is better than the 2018 with brilliant delineation on the nose and newfound purity. The palate is silky smooth with enormous depth, wonderful concentration and outstanding precision towards the finish with layers of lightly spiced black fruit. This is Fabulous with a capital « F ». Tasted at the Haut-Bailly vertical at the château.

The 2019 Haut-Bailly unwinds in the glass with complex aromas of dark berries, bay leaf, loamy soil and cigar wrapper, framed by a discreet patina of new oak. Full-bodied, velvety and elegantly muscular, it’s powerful and concentrated, with lively acids and an abundance of ripe but youthfully assertive structuring tannin that will demand some patience.

Couleur sombre, intense, pourpre et belle. Beau nez très aromatique, fruité, suave et délicatement vanillé, qui prend des nuances d’encre et gagne en complexité à l’agitation du verre. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, complexe dans ses arômes, avec énormément de goût – c’est son point fort – le vin fond au palais, juteux et noble. Il s’achève profond, mêlant subtilement des sensations de trame et de tendreté. C’est superbe. Une grande réussite.

Elegance and sophistication are front and center in the 2019 Haut-Bailly. A wine of finesse and understatement, the 2019 reveals itself slowly in the glass. Graphite, crushed rocks, lavender, blackberry and lavender are some of the nuances that develop over time, but more than anything else, the 2019 is all about focus, persistence and simply exquisite overall balance. It is easily one of the highlights of the vintage.
